ChatShield Privacy Policy
ChatShield is a browser extension for Safari and Chrome that blurs or hides names, profile photos, messages and media in Messenger on facebook.com and messenger.com, so people around you can't read your screen. This policy explains what data ChatShield handles — in short, none leaves your device.
1. Data We Collect
None.
ChatShield does not collect, store, sell or share any personal data.
- check_circleChatShield does not copy, save or send your messages, contacts, names or photos anywhere.
- check_circleThere is no account, sign-up or login.
- check_circleThere are no analytics, tracking, advertising or third-party SDKs.
- check_circleChatShield makes no network requests — not to us, and not to any third party.
2. How ChatShield Works on the Page
To decide what to blur, ChatShield looks at the structure of the Messenger page inside your browser — which parts are the chat list, the conversation, names, photos or the typing indicator — and applies a blur or hide style to them. All of this happens locally on your device. The content of the page is never recorded or transmitted.
3. Data Stored on Your Device
ChatShield saves only your settings: whether protection is on, blur or hide, the blur level, which items to hide, and whether reveal-on-hover is on. They are kept in your browser's extension storage.
If you use your browser's own sync (for example, Chrome Sync), your browser may copy these settings to your other signed-in devices. That syncing is done by your browser provider under its own privacy policy; we never receive the settings. Uninstalling ChatShield removes them.
4. Permissions & Website Access
ChatShield asks your browser for the minimum it needs:
- check_circleWebsite access to facebook.com, web.facebook.com and messenger.com — so it can blur those pages. It does not run on any other website.
- check_circleStorage — to remember your settings, as described above.
In Safari you choose which of these websites ChatShield may run on, and you can change that at any time in Safari Settings → Extensions.
5. Links to Other Websites
The ChatShield popup has an optional "Buy me a coffee" link. It opens buymeacoffee.com in a new tab only when you click it, and that website is governed by its own privacy policy.
6. Children
ChatShield does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.
7. Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
